About Senior Outreach and Referral (SOAR)

  • Trains interested people to recognize symptoms that an older person may need assistance; people who have received this training are called Gatekeepers.
  • Older persons can become overwhelmed and their already fragile pool of resources is drained; there may be observable changes in their appearance or behavior.
  • Older persons may be reluctant or unable to access services for many reasons;  Gatekeepers may notice such changes and make a confidential call to the SOAR information hotline:  1-800-433-1943 or 724-852-1943
  • After a Gatekeeper makes a confidential call, a trained team of professionals visit the individual or family.
  • Many times the older person does realize they are in trouble and is grateful that the SOAR team has come. Other times, several visits are needed to build trust, before the person will accept help.
  • To learn more about Project SOAR, the indicators of distress, and how to call the hotline there is a 30-60 minute Gatekeeper training.
  • Greene County residents, community groups and employers can arrange for the training by calling the Program Coordinator at 724-852-2893 ext. 532.
