About Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
- Works under the auspices of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)
- Provides free, basic, online tax filing assistance to low-income, working taxpayers who are eligible to claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)
- The EITC is a refundable tax break for people who work but do not earn high incomes
- The free tax filing service typically runs from mid February until late March.
- Sites are located in: Washington, Waynesburg, California, Carmichaels and Donora.
- Volunteers are needed to help run the sites and no previous tax knowledge is needed!
To claim the EITC on a tax return, the following requirements must be met:
- Must have earned income from employment or from self-employment.
- Earned income and adjusted gross income (AGI) must be less than:
- $36,348 (in 2007) with more than one qualifying child $38,348 if
married, filing jointly
- $32,001 (in 2007) with one qualifying child
- $34,001 if married, filing jointly
- $12,120 (in 2007) with no qualifying child
- $14,120 if married, filing jointly
- Investment income (such as interest) must be $2,800 or less.
- Your filing status cannot be married, filing separately
- You must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien all year, or a nonresident alien married to a U.S. citizen or resident alien and filing a joint return.
- You cannot be a qualifying child of another person.
